Privacy Policy

SmartExpense (“we”, “our”, or “the app”) helps groups track shared expenses and
settle balances. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it,
and your choices. By using SmartExpense, you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
- Account information — When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, profile photo URL, and a unique user ID from Firebase Authentication.
- Expense and room data — Room names, member lists, expenses, splits, settlement records, notes, and amounts you enter are stored in Google Firebase Firestore so your group can collaborate in real time.
- Receipt and bill images — If you attach a photo for an expense or settlement proof, the image is compressed on your device and uploaded to our image hosting service. Images are associated with a room ID and used only to display receipts to room members.
- Device and push tokens — We store Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) tokens to send notifications about settlements and room activity. We may also collect basic device information required by Firebase services.
- App preferences — Theme choice and similar settings may be stored locally on your device.
2. Information we do not collect
- We do not process or store UPI/bank payments inside the app.
- We do not collect your UPI ID, card numbers, or banking credentials.
- When you tap Pay, Android opens your chosen UPI app on your phone. That payment happens entirely outside SmartExpense.
3. How we use your information
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure
- Sync expenses, balances, and settlements with people in your rooms
- Display receipt images to room members
- Send push notifications about settlements and updates
- Deliver app updates (including over-the-air patches via Shorebird)
- Improve reliability and fix bugs
4. Permissions on Android
- Camera — To take photos of bills and settlement receipts.
- Photos / media — To pick existing images from your gallery for bills and proof of payment.
- Notifications — To alert you about settlement status and room activity.
- Internet — Required to sync data and upload images.
- Installed UPI apps (queries) — Used only to show Android’s “Pay with” chooser so you can pick GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, or another UPI app. We do not read your installed apps list for advertising or tracking.
5. Third-party services
SmartExpense uses trusted third-party services that process data on our behalf:
- Google Firebase — Authentication, Firestore database, Cloud Messaging
- Google Sign-In — Account login
- Cloudflare Workers — Secure image upload and delivery for receipts
- Shorebird — App update delivery

6. Data sharing
Expense and settlement data in a room is visible to members of that room.
We do not sell your personal information. We may disclose data if required by law
or to protect the rights and safety of users.
7. Data retention and deletion
Data remains in Firebase while your account and rooms exist. If you delete your
account or leave all rooms, associated personal data can be removed upon request.
Uploaded receipt images may remain until manually deleted or until the room is removed.
8. Security
Data is transmitted over HTTPS. Firebase security rules restrict access so only
authenticated room members can read room data. No method of storage is 100% secure,
but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
9. Children
SmartExpense is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
10. Your rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your data. Contact us using the email below.
11. Changes
We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app means you accept the updated policy.
