Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the SmartExpense mobile application (“the app”). By creating an account or using the app, you agree to these Terms.

1. What SmartExpense does

SmartExpense is a group expense tracker. It helps roommates, friends, and groups record shared expenses, calculate balances, suggest settlements, and attach receipt images. The app is a record-keeping tool — it does not move money on your behalf.

2. Accounts

You must sign in with a valid Google account.
You are responsible for activity under your account.
Do not share your login credentials or impersonate another person.
We may suspend accounts that abuse the service or violate these Terms.

3. Rooms and shared data

When you join or create a room, other members can see expenses, balances, settlements, and receipts you add to that room.
You are responsible for the accuracy of amounts and descriptions you enter.
Room creators may have additional management abilities (such as removing members).

4. Payments and UPI

The Pay button opens your phone’s UPI app chooser (e.g. GPay, PhonePe, Paytm). SmartExpense does not process payments.
Any transfer of money happens between you and your UPI app provider under their terms.
Confirm in the app only records that a payment was made and optionally attaches proof — it is not a bank confirmation.
Settlement disputes should be resolved between members. SmartExpense is not a financial institution or escrow service.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Use the app for illegal activity or fraud
Upload offensive, harmful, or non-consensual images
Attempt to access other users’ data without authorization
Reverse engineer, scrape, or overload our services
Use the app to harass or defraud other members

6. Content you upload

You retain ownership of photos and notes you upload. You grant us a limited license to store, display, and transmit that content to other members of your room so the app can function.

7. Service availability

We aim to keep SmartExpense available but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Maintenance, updates, Firebase outages, or network issues may cause temporary downtime. We may change or discontinue features with reasonable notice where possible.

8. Disclaimer

THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT BALANCE CALCULATIONS OR SETTLEMENT SUGGESTIONS ARE ERROR-FREE. YOU SHOULD VERIFY AMOUNTS BEFORE MAKING REAL-WORLD PAYMENTS. SMARTEXPENSE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DISPUTES BETWEEN USERS OR FOR LOSSES FROM PAYMENT ERRORS.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, SmartExpense and its developers are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including lost money, data loss, or disputes between room members.

10. Privacy

Your use of the app is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data.

11. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time by signing out or uninstalling it. We may terminate or restrict access if you violate these Terms.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date. Continued use after changes means you accept the new Terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Disputes shall be subject to the courts of your jurisdiction in India, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
